Mixing and matching…

Wednesday, 15 February 2012

I have always rejected the rigidity of formal dining rooms (too many memories of Sunday roasts at my grandmother’s house cooped up in a hot dining room being told I couldn’t leave the table until I cleared my plate… gosh, I wish that was a problem for me now)! As a result of these Sundays, the dining room is my least favourite room in the house. Luckily, these rooms have evolved a lot since I was a child and I am seeing a lot more open-plan, relaxed dining rooms which really appeal to me. Using mismatched chairs instantly creates a charming relaxed atmosphere. I particularly like the idea of mixing and matching small chairs with long benches or adding large brightly upholstered chairs to the heads of the table.

What do you think of mismatched chairs in the dining room?

Velvet Sofas… yay or nay?

Wednesday, 11 January 2012

Past posts will reveal that I am a big sucker for a good chair… I probably spend far too much time looking through chair inspiration… is there a support group for me? On my radar at the moment, are velvet sofas. Nothing says opulence and luxury more than a bit of velvet. But I have my reservations – is this a timeless trend or will I be looking at my sofa in 15 years wondering what the hell I was thinking? Will it lose it’s velvety softness and look like a threadbare towel in a few years?

What are your feelings on velvet sofas? Yay or Nay?

Idle Hands…

Skona Hem Xmas 3 Image found here

Since I finished my interior design course, I have been itching to start a new project and learn something new. Since I spend a huge chunk of my time slouched in front of a computer screen, I am keen to do something that involves working with my hands. I have finally settled on something that requires me to get my hands dirty and caters for my almighty chair obsession – reupholstering! I’ve done a little research and thanks to amazing bloggers and tons of websites, there is a wealth of reupholstering info out there for amateurs like me.  Now just to find a chair with good bones that needs some love and care! Have you/would you reupholster something? If you have, what am I getting myself in for?

Here is my (ambitious) inspiration…
