A villa in the winelands…

Monday, 13 August 2012

I realised with some shock over the weekend that it has been nearly 4 years since I have been home to South Africa. I don’t get homesick nearly as often as I used to but surprisingly the warm weather made me long for the familiarity of home. I am particularly missing the wide open spaces, the accent and the languages and of course the food! I’m indulging myself today and taking you on a tour around a villa situated in the heart of the South African wine route. If that spectacular view of the Simonsberg mountains doesn’t reel you in, then how about the spectacular pool, the Cape Dutch thatched roof, the beamed ceilings, the shutters, the kitchen… need I go on?

Let’s go!

Thursday, 5 April 2012

We have been super lucky this year as our winter has been fairly mild and dry but that doesn’t mean we can let our guard down! I still find myself waking up in the night hoping that the orange glow in the room is from the blazing sun rather than the sinister glare of the London sodium streetlights. And now with Easter fast approaching (errm, where did the last 3 months go anyone?), I find myself missing the familiarity of home. Even though I have been here for 7 years, nothing beats that feeling of the airplane coming around the side of Table Mountain, or walking through the airport and hearing your own familiar accent, or even taking your first breath of home air! There is no other word for it, I am pining! I thought I would humour myself by looking for the perfect South African retreat, the very famous Spier Wine Estate will do nicely! Can you believe this beautiful estate has been established since 1692!

The rains in Africa…

Thursday, 11 August 2011

Confession: I am bad with dates and numbers. I forget birthdays, anniversary’s, pin numbers and dentist appointments. I once forgot our anniversary and I have yet to live it down! It recently dawned on us that we had forgotten our 6 year anniversary of living in London, and I was completely gutted that I missed it. With that, came the realisation that we have lived here for a quarter of our lives! This really made me feel old/older so of course I turned to Häagen-Dazs.

We came over to London fresh out of school with the intention of bumming around Europe for a couple of years and then going home. Well bum around we certainly didn’t. It’s been a long hard journey for us with many ups and downs but we are still here, seeing the world like we set out to do. Although I wouldn’t change our choice for love or money, it continues to be a hard choice to live away from home. Life can get lonely for us without our close family and friends and we often talk about how different our lives would be if we hadn’t have left, but then we think about all the amazing things that we have seen and done and the future we are building for ourselves and it makes it all worth it! Since that speech has made me miss home a little, here are some pics of my little piece of Africa.
