Pull up a chair

I think this might well be the very first art installation that I have ever blogged about! I must admit that I know very little about modern art and in truth, I am seldom a fan of it but every once in a while I find something that I feel warrants my full attention and today’s post is an example of that. The installation was created by Chinese born contemporary artist Ai Weiwei and was displayed at the 2013 Venice Art Biennale. Typically every Chinese family has at least one stool that serves a range of purposes and is then passed down through generations but these simple wooden objects have declined in production and have been replaced with generic metal and plastic stools. I’m probably not doing a very good job of describing a poignant meaning behind the installation so I’ll leave that up to the professionals but I’ll just say that in my humble opinion, I thought it was freaking amazing!

  3. I'm so fascinated by the Venice Biennale, ever since reading that book "Seven Days in the Art World." One day I'd love to go but it sounds like such a whirlwind! xo

  4. how interesting. i am always looking out for stools at yard sales and thirft stores and have found a couple old wooden ones i love. i have an 50's fold up one that i used when i was a little girl at my grandparents - it too had so many uses. when they passed away it was one of the first and only things i really wanted to wanted to get.

  5. I think it's mind blowing. Very moving. It makes me forget whatever I'm thinking and spend time just staring at it.

  6. Wow, that is amazing. Funny that the Chinese are using metal and plastic stools now, and here in NZ, vintage wooden furniture is so popular. People would pay big money for those stools :) x
