The Wonder of Bodiam

A lazy and cold Saturday afternoon called for a visit to Bodiam Castle, a 14th century moated (ruinous) castle set in the heart of 1066 country. Jordan and I have vowed to visit as many moated castles as we can in our lifetime (because a castle isn’t really a castle to us if it doesn’t have a moat) so we were so excited to tick another one off the list. The steep staircases are not for the feint hearted and the constant warnings about bats had me questioning my sanity but the views of the surrounding countryside are well worth the effort.

Couldn’t think of a better way to spend an afternoon!

P.S – it wasn’t misty the afternoon we visited but I came across some haunting pictures of the castle surrounded by an eerie mist that made me think we should return for another look around on a cold and misty morning…

  2. What an amazing place! My dream is it to gallop across a moat on a horse in my lifetime, always liked how they did it in movies. I always love to picture how places like this looked in its heyday...

  7. This is amazing! My husband is kind of obsessed with castles so he would go crazy over this. I hope we can visit one someday, but until then I'll live vicariously through your lovely photos :)

  9. Soo cool! I remember visiting a few castles while I was in France. It's just intriguing and hard to imagine people lived in them, faught in them, too prisoners in ..... Gosh knows what else. If only those old brick walls could talk.

    1. Hi Alyson, it's a National Trust property in East Sussex. Well worth the visit but if time is tight and you love moated castles, can I suggest a visit to Anne Boleyn's childhood home Hever Castle - it's absolutely stunning (one of my favourites). I did a blog post some time back about it here: http://my-wishfulthinking.blogspot.co.uk/2011/10/hever-castle.html It doesn't quite do it justice though!

  12. In a past life I definitely lived in a castle like this. I've always felt the strangest, strongest pull towards 11th and 12th century medieval castles and life, for some reason. I think the obvious answer is that I was a princess who lived behind a moat in a tall tower, for sure. :) Great shots! And that fog is really super eerie!
