And they said it could not be done. Yes, a few months ago, I made the foolish decision of going glamping in the middle of winter. I had this idea of the great outdoors, a fire, a little romance and a quiet place to clear my head. I wasn’t thinking about the cold, rain or vast quantities of mud. And so planning commenced but the day before we were meant to leave, the owner of the Sheppard's hut we booked called to say that temperatures expected to plummet to -4 degrees and we were unlikely to get hot water from the propane tank to bath. We despaired and debated about cancelling but ultimately decided to give the middle finger to the weather and go anyway. I am so glad we did. Nights were spent huddled inside enjoying a delicious home-cooked meal by candle and fire light while the rain and wind howled outside. Mornings were more chaotic - spent starting the fire before we froze to death, whilst simultaneously setting off the smoke alarm and upsetting the surrounding spitting llamas (yes, there were llamas). I soon proved what a townie I was by being tasked with getting hot water for much-needed coffee from the fisherman’s storm kettle (if you have used one of these then I salute you). I managed to create billowing smoke signals and that was about it. I certainly was a sight to behold – soot-smeared, eyes streaming and half dying from smoke inhalation but we finally got the stupid kettle lit (of course Jordan had to step in with firelighters which is technically cheating). A cup of coffee has never tasted better.
I’ll share some more pics with you tomorrow…
It looks amazing...I would love to stay there sometime:)

Whoa! You are a brave little toaster for agreeing to that. Not that I wouldn't, because I totally would as I am charmed to bits by the teeny tiny cabin and all those Cath Kidston sheets, BUT that outhouse and smoking pipe in the ground situation is enough to rattle me. I'm apparently high maintenance, haha.
ReplyDeleteAlso, amazing that someone played "turd" in Scrabble. You guys are adorable!
Oh my goodness, that is so stinkin cute! But braving -4 temperatures and no hot water, that is BRAVERY!! I bow down to your tenacity, working kettle or not ;) xxx
